Run a Poker Tournament on Your iPad | Shuffle Up and Deal!

You have run tournaments off a laptop balanced on a bar stool, a stopwatch, a printed blind schedule and a spreadsheet that nobody trusts. It works, right up to the moment you have to balance two tables, seat three late entrants and sort a pay-out while the clock is still running.

Here is the better version: run the whole night from the iPad or iPhone already in your bag. No laptop. No spreadsheets. No paper seat draw. This is how a full tournament runs on Shuffle Up and Deal!, from first registration to the final table.

Set up the tournament before a single player sits down

Everything a poker tournament management app needs to know lives in a reusable tournament template. Build it once and your weekly league runs off the same setup every time.

Start with your blind structure. Set your levels, antes, break timing and time per level - whether that is a 20-minute weekly structure or a slower deepstack for a weekend event. Save it as a format, name it, and it is there next week.

Then set the commercial side: buy-in, fees, starting stack, rebuys, re-entries, add-ons, late registration cut-off, knockouts and bounty amounts. Set your table size and your pay-out structure, including how many places get paid and how the money splits. If you run a league, attach the points system now so standings update themselves as the night goes on.

None of this is fiddly. It is the same decisions you already make with a marker pen and a spreadsheet - it just lives in a template you never have to rewrite.

Register players and take the money

Open registration and start taking entries. Each player gets checked in from the iPad or through the browser-based live tracker, so a second person on a phone can help you register a queue.

Late registration and re-entry are handled as they happen. A player who busts in level four can re-enter, and the app updates the player count, the prize pool and the average stack in real time. No manual recalculation, no arguing about whether the tallies are right.

This is the point where a spreadsheet usually starts to fail. The moment numbers change - and in a live tournament they change constantly - a static sheet is out of date. A proper poker tournament management app keeps the figures live.

Draw seats and balance tables automatically

The seat draw is where paper systems fall apart. Shuffle Up and Deal! generates the seat draw for you, spreading players across tables fairly from the off.

As players bust or new entries arrive, the app balances the tables for you. When a table has to break, it handles that too, moving players to the correct seats and keeping the counts level. If you prefer to make a call yourself, manual reseating is right there - but on a busy night, automatic balancing is the difference between running the room and being buried in it.

Every move is logged, so there is a record of who sat where and when. If a player disputes a seat, you have the answer in seconds.

Run the clock from the same screen

The tournament clock is the heartbeat of the night, and it runs from the device in your hand or casts to a TV or second screen. Players see the current level, the blinds, the time remaining and the break coming up. You see the average stack, the player count, the prize pool and the tables at a glance.

External displays are what make a small game look professional. A second screen becomes a poker room display showing blinds, the clock, the next level, the money, the seating and the tournament info, with animations for level changes, breaks, knockouts, the bubble, ITM and finishing positions. Add your venue logo, colours and a ticker message and it looks like a room that knows what it is doing.

For an organiser, that presentation matters. Players take a tournament more seriously when the information is clear and consistent.

Manage eliminations, the bubble and the pay-out

As players bust, they are eliminated from the iPad in a couple of taps, with undo for the inevitable mis-click. The app tracks finishing positions and updates the standings and the average stack as the field thins.

The bubble is where nerves and edge cases pile up. The app tracks who is left and how many spots pay, so everyone knows when the hand-for-hand bubble has arrived and when players are in the money. When you reach the final table, the pay-out is calculated from the structure you set at the start - no last-minute maths, no disputes.

Players can follow their own stack and standing on their phones through the live tracker, so you are not fielding the same question from five tables at once.

A full night, start to finish

Set up the template, open registration, draw seats, run the clock, balance tables, log eliminations, pay the final table. That is the whole night, managed from one device you already own.

If you want to see what running a home poker tournament looks like without the laptop and the spreadsheets, build your first structure in Shuffle Up and Deal! this week - your regulars will notice the difference before the first break.
